The Lakeview Academy boys tennis team fell to host Athens Academy Thursday in the finals of the Region 8-A championship.

The equation was simple for the Creekview boys’ soccer team Tuesday night: beat West Hall and claim the Area 7-AAA title. The Spartans, however, had designs of their own on the 7-AAA title and used a stifling defense in taking a 2-0 win over Creekview on Senior Night at West Hall Stadium.

For most of the first half of Saturday night’s ASA Matt Hawkins Memorial 100 at Lanier National Speedway, Shane Sawyer appeared to be in total control leading by as many as 10 car lengths at one point on the 3/8th-mile oval.

The Flowery Branch soccer team did its part. Now, it will have to wait and see whether a second straight trip to the Class AAA playoffs is in the cards. With their playoff lives hanging in the balance, the Falcons completed their Area 7-AAA schedule with a 2-0 win over Lumpkin County Thursday night at Falcons Stadium.

Defending Region 7-AAA baseball champion Flowery Branch is showing it is not ready to relinquish its title without a fight.

Mark Teixeira is fitting in quite nicely with the New York Yankees. The first baseman, who signed an eight-year deal worth $180 million in the offseason, hit his second spring home run and raised his Grapefruit League average to .391 as the Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-4 on Saturday.

One big man was last year's national player of the year. The other appears poised to take his place. Now, Tyler Hansbrough and Blake Griffin will go head-to-head with a lot more at stake than any individual honor. Hansbrough has led top-seeded North Carolina to within a victory of a second straight Final Four. But to get there the Tar Heels will have to go through Griffin and Oklahoma on Sunday.

Connecticut is making another trip from the desert to the Final Four. The wait goes on for Missouri. Freshman Kemba Walker scored 23 points as the top-seeded Huskies held off Missouri 82-75 on Saturday to earn a trip to Detroit and extend the Big East's dominance of the NCAA tournament.
