Jefferson man charged in fatal August shooting

By Austin Eller News Director

A Jefferson man was arrested Sunday in connection with a fatal August shooting in the city.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Edwin Garcia Alonzo, 36, was charged with murder in connection with the Aug. 18 shooting death of Mateo Gomez Lucas.

Alonzo was arrested Sunday in Hall County. Jail records show he has since been booked at the Jackson County Jail.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation told AccessWDUN in August that Jefferson Police requested the Bureau's assistance in investigating the shooting death of Gomez. The GBI was notified of the shooting shortly before 11 p.m. on Aug. 18, and was told that Gomez had apparently been shot near the intersection of U.S. 129 BUS and Storey Lane.

That location is near Sunshine Self Storage and Faith Baptist Church of Jefferson.

"Upon arrival, officers found Mateo Gomez unconscious from his injuries," said Nelly Miles, the Director of the GBI's Office of Public & Governmental Affairs late Saturday evening. "Gomez was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia where he died as a result of his injuries."
