The Medina family Friday night hosted a remembrance ceremony at Gainesville High School to honor Jeremy Medina, who passed earlier this month after being taken off life support.

Medina was practicing in the batting cages on Nov. 20 at Gainesville High School when he was accidentally struck in the head by a baseball bat at approximately 1:20 p.m., according to school officials.

Medina was declared brain-dead and lay in a coma for several weeks. It was announced on Dec. 6 that Medina would be taken off life support. He passed on Dec. 11, and his family elected to honor his wish to be an organ donor.

Community members, sports teams and family came together Friday night to honor Jeremy’s memory and celebrate his life.

“The strength and the faith of the entire Medina family that I was able to witness throughout this whole tragic event and the timeline that followed up after the accident is something that will never ever leave my mind,” Gainesville High School Assistant Athletic Director Adam Miller said.

Various community members and others related to Jeremy spoke to his character, attitude and ambition as a student, son, brother and friend to many in the Gainesville area.
