A man from Demorest was seriously injured Friday evening after he crashed the dirt bike he was driving while fleeing from authorities in Habersham County.

The Georgia State Patrol said in a press release that Mason Tench, 30, of Demorest, was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville following the wreck on Shook Road at about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The Habersham County Sheriff's Office said deputies initially responded to the area of Wheeler Road and Garrett Road in the Fairview community west of Clarkesville after receiving a call about someone trespassing in the area on a dirt bike.

When the deputy identified himself to Tench at the intersection and asked him to pull over, Tench instead pulled away onto Shook Road.

Tench eventually crashed his Honda CRF dirt bike after striking a log that was partially in the dirt road. He suffered serious injuries as a result and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville.

The Georgia State Patrol said Tench was charged with driving under the influence.
