By Lauren Hunter Multimedia Journalist

The District 2 Department of Public Health is offering additional doses of the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines to individuals who are immunocompromised due to serious medical conditions.

According to a press release sent from District 2 on Thursday, the extra doses are only approved for the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine. The doses will be offered on a walk-in basis at any of the District 2 locations.

The additional doses are also reserved for those with certain serious medical conditions, not as booster shots for the general public. Per Georgia Department of Public Health guidelines, those wanting an additional vaccine must provide a signed doctor's statement with information about the specific health condition they suffer from. Acceptable forms are on the District 2 Public Health website.

An additional COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for individuals with the following conditions, according to District 2 Department of Public Health:

  • Active treatment for solid tumor and hematologic malignancies
  • Receipt of a solid-organ transplant and taking immunosuppressive therapy
  • Receipt of CAR-T-cell or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (within 2 years of transplantation or taking immunosuppression therapy)
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids (≥20mg prednisone or equivalent per day), alkylating agents, antimetabolites, transplant-related immunosuppressive drugs, cancer chemotherapeutic agents classified as severely immunosuppressive, tumor-necrosis (TNF) blockers, and other biologic agents that are immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory

District 2 Department of Public Health locations and hours are also on their website.
