Tennis: Branch sweeps Jefferson; Buford cruises past Hab Central; GHS girls win

JEFFERSON — The Flowery Branch girls wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Region 8-4A tournament with a shutout win over Jefferson, 5-0, on Monday. 

The Branch boys also beat Jefferson, 4-1, and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament. 

Alyssa McSpadden and Sandra Hernandez didn't allow a set point, winning in the straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and Julianna Velaj also dominated her sets, 6-0, 6-1. In doubles action, Madison Sedwick and Avery Marx were tested by Allianna Clark and Alexis Walker in the No. 1 match but came out on top, 6-4, 6-4. 

Katie Martin and Polina Chernikova rolled in the No. 2 doubles match, winning 6-0, 6-0. 

In the boy's action, Will Hernadez and Jack Thomas smashed their way to straight-set wins while shutting out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. Caden Caldwell captured his duel with Chase Tyner, 6-0, 6-1. 

Mason Foreman and Josh Warren battled through the first set against Grant Morrow and Roman Smith, 6-3, in the No. 1 doubles match but blanked them, 6-0, in the second set to win in straight sets. 


BUFORD GIRLS 5,
HAB CENTRAL 0

It was a day of shutouts for the Lady Wolves in the win over Habersham Central on Monday at Buford City Park. 

The Lady Wolves gave up just six set points to capture the top seed in next week's Region 8-6A tournament. 

In singles action, Taylor Aycock, Callie Perkins and Izzy Brewer won 6-0, 6-0. 

Taylor Ryczek and Kennedy Deloach made it a bit more interesting in the No. 1 doubles match against Kiree Tomas and Preslee Hix but pulled out both, 6-2, 6-4. Marigrace Crossett and Sophie Brewer won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 2 doubles. 


BUFORD BOYS 5,
HAB CENTRAL 0

The Wolves played the perfect match against Habersham Central on Monday at Buford City Park. 

Buford didn't allow a set point all day, rolling through the field in a dominant fashion. The Wolves will be the No. 1 seed in next week's Region 8-6A tournament. 

In singles, Dean Kingsley, James Troutt and Nic Keller won 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Leyton Grothe and Brent Sherman and Luke Clark and Eugene Oh also won their matches, 6-0, 6-0. 


GAINESVILLE GIRLS 4,
FORSYTH CENTRAL 1

The Red Elephants ended the season strong with a win over Forsyth Central on Monday at Longwood Park. 

With the win, Gainesville finished fifth in Region 6-7A. 

Callie Patterson battled back to win the match with the tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5, and Lilly Winston on in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Sarah Ellen Toms and Grace Nguyen won, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, and Madeline Gruhn and Page Thompson won, 6-2, 6-1.
