Sheriff: Stephens County 'active shooter' on Ga. 17 arrested

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley says a man who allegedly shot at passing traffic Friday afternoon, resulting in the lockdown of all county schools, now is in custody.

“There was an active shooter on the Highway 17 Bypass traveling toward Walmart who was randomly shooting at passing traffic,” Shirley said in a social media post. “One of the vehicles, a tractor-trailer, was struck by one of the projectiles. The shooter confronted the driver face to face. Another vehicle gave chase, alerting dispatch to his direction of travel. We appreciate the citizen response and are thankful for all the assistance each of you gave.”

The truck and attached pontoon boat occupied by the alleged shooter was located behind a home after several witnesses provided a positive identification.

“The individual was arrested a short time ago without incident,” Shirley said.

Shirley acknowledged Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize and his officers, who assisted with interviews and collecting important evidence. Additionally, he acknowledged Sgt. 1st Class Chad Johnson and troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 7 for backing up his deputies.

“Thank you to the 9-1-1 Dispatch personnel who were always at their ultimate best,” Shirley said.

Specifics about the individual and the charges he faces have not been announced.
