UPDATE: GSP releases details of serious-injury Habersham crash

The Georgia State Patrol says an Alabama man in a rented box truck was cited after Tuesday morning’s serious-injury wreck on Ga. 15/U.S. 441 at Antioch Church Road in Habersham County.

The two-vehicle wreck was reported at 7:59 a.m.

A 2017 International Budget rental truck operated by Cardell Lindsay III, 27, of Mobile, Ala., was traveling west on Antioch Church Road, and was attempting to proceed straight on Antioch Church Road while crossing over Ga. 15 (U.S. 441), according to Trooper 1st Class T.S. Sanders of GSP Post 7 in Toccoa.

A 2004 Chevrolet Astro van driven by Jesus Morales Duran, 28, of Cornelia was traveling north on Ga. 15 in the right travel lane, when the box truck entered Ga. 15 and struck the van in the right side, according to Sanders.

The van continued traveling north, while completely overturning one time, coming to final rest roughly 220 feet from the area of impact, Sanders said.

Sanders identified the passengers in the van as Orlando Navarrete-Alcaraz, 26, of Cornelia, and Jose Alejandro Contreras Juarez, 20, of Cornelia.

Navarrete-Alcaraz, who was ejected, and Contreras Juarez, who was trapped and had to be freed from the wreckage, were seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Duran and Lindsay also suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance for treatment.

Lindsay was cited by Sanders for failure to yield, and for a commercial motor vehicle hours of service violation by the Motor Carrier Compliance Division.

The wreck closed the northbound lanes of Ga. 15/U.S. 441 for about two hours, with the road reopening about 10 a.m.
