A Guatemala citizen who was deported from the United States and then returned to North Georgia to traffic drugs and guns will spend the next 20 years in federal prison.

Eduardo Estrada Medina, who also went by the name Miguel Angel Donis-Gonzalez, was sentenced in federal court in Gainesville for trafficking firearms and methamphetamine.  Medina, a citizen of Guatemala, illegally re-entered the U.S. after being deported, purchased several weapons and trafficked in methamphetamine, according to a press statement from the U.S. Attorney General's Office of North Georgia.

"Medina was previously deported in 2013 as a result of his drug offenses, but returned to the U.S. to continue trafficking drugs and guns," U. S. Attorney Byung J. "BJay" Pak wrote in the statement. "The illegal drug business and guns are frequent companions in crime, but we will continue to relentlessly pursue criminals like Medina who blatantly disregard our laws and threaten our communities with these kind of criminal activities."

According to Pak, Medina was arrested at a residence in Winder on June 6, 2017 after ATF agents saw him take possession of a firearm from an individual the agents knew to be prohibited from possessing firearms.

At that point, agents obtained and executed a search warrant for Medina's residence. During the search, the agents found 8.8 kilograms of methamphetamine, $160,000 cash, a heat sealer, a money counter, three ledgers, baggies, scales, phones and eight guns in his bedroom.

The 29-year-old Medina was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release on Monday, May 21, 2018. Medina had pleaded guilty on February 28, 2018 to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in the furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
