Week 9 previews: Region titles on the line in crucial contests

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

A pair of region titles could be decided this week around northeast Georgia as Week 9 has a full slate of 17 games on tap around the area.

Regions 7-3A and 8-3A can crown champions depending on circumstances. The most notable game on the schedule has Class 3A No. 8 Jefferson playing host to No.  3 Monroe Area in 8-3A with the winner outright capturing the title.

In Region 7-3A, Greater Atlanta Christian can claim the title with a win over Cherokee Bluff and a Fannin County loss to Dawson County. The Tigers and North Hall, which plays host to Lumpkin County, could continue to set up their season finale clash for the No. 2 spot in 7-3A next month with wins on Friday.

In the other four regions covering northeast Georgia teams, things are very much up for grabs. And Friday’s action will go a long way to setting an exciting two week finish.

In Region 7-4A, Flowery Branch gets another shot at taking down a powerhouse when the Falcons travel to No. 5 Marist. The Falcons lost a heartbreaker in overtime last week to No. 1 Blessed Trinity and a win over the War Eagles could clinch a top two finish in the region.

In Region 8-2A, Rabun County and Union County both are heavy road favorites as they also appear headed for a season finale clash for the region title. The Wildcats and Panthers are among the most explosive offensive teams in Class 2A and should get past Putnam County and Oglethorpe County, respectively.

Region 8-6A get back in action after a week off and Habersham Central and Gainesville both play host to crucial games against Dacula and Winder-Barrow, respectively. The winless Red Elephants are still alive for a playoff berth and can get in the middle of things with a win. The Raiders already are in the playoff mix but can make a run at the region title if they can knock off the powerful Falcons.

And in Region 8-A, Riverside Military Academy can set up a shot at a subregion title and a shot at the overall region title with a win over Hebron Christian at Maginnis Field.

-- CHESTATEE (1-6, 0-3 Region 7-4A): Bye last week; lost 69-13 to Flowery Branch on Oct. 5
-- NOTABLE: Blessed Trinity leads series 2-0. The Titans won 41-14 in 2017 in Gainesville. ... Chestatee could be catching the Titans at just the right time. Blessed Trinity is coming off a huge emotional win and has Marist next week and could be looking past the struggling War Eagles. ... While the Chestatee defense has surrendered the most points in Class 4A (408, 58.2 ppg) the War Eagles have had two weeks to get rested. They also have the classification’s top rusher in So. QB Christian Charles (1,002 yards, 14 TDs, 6 100-yard games) who also has thrown for 1,170 yards and 6 TDs giving him 2,172 yards of combined offense, the most in Class 4A. ... The Titans, however, have yielded just 76 points (10.8 ppg) on the season. They can clinch a playoff spot this week. ... -- COMMERCE (7-0, 2-0 Region 8-A North): Ranked No. 5 in Class A Public power rankings; defeated Hebron Christian 21-18 last week
-- TOWNS COUNTY (2-5, 0-2 Region 8-A North): Ranked No. 26 in Class A Public power rankings; bye last week; lost 47-0 to Hebron Christian on Oct. 5
-- NOTABLE: Commerce leads series 22-0. The Tigers won 38-14 in 2017 in Hiawassee. ... Commerce won a huge game last week in the first major battle for the top spot in the subregion. The Tigers are off to their best start since producing an undefeated 10-0 regular season in 1999. ... It’s a big game for both teams. Commerce is fighting for the top spot in the subregion after last week’s big win while the Indians are fighting to stay alive for a playoff spot. ... Towns is just .52-points out of a playoff spot. A win would certainly give them a boost in the ratings. The Indians have lost four straight as part of brutal schedule. All four losses have been to Region 8-A teams that are all projected to make the playoffs. ... The Tigers ground game was dominating last week churning out 266 yards behind DYlan Deaton , who had 99 yards, and DaJuan Wood, who scored twice. They attempted just one pass against the Lions. ... Commerce is 6th in Class A in defense having allowed 65 points (9.2 ppg) on the season.

The last two contests have been decided by a total of 16 points. ... An interesting matchup as the Raiders are in the top 10 in offense (226, 32.3 ppg) in Class 6A while Dacula has yielded 114 points and just 34 points (8.5 ppg) during its 4-game win streak. ... Sr. Habersham QB Tre Luttrell is having a huge season. He is 13th in all classifications and 2nd in Class 6A in passing (1,454 yards) and is averaging just under 90 yards a game rushing as well. Donnie Curry (610 yards receiving) is his favorite target. ... The Raiders can climb into a tie for first in the region with a win and a Lanier loss to Apalachee, which would create a four-way longjam. A loss could drop the Raiders all the way to fourth. ... Dacula, however, has won 12 straight Region 8-6A contests going back to the 2016 season.

DAWSON COUNTY at FANNIN COUNTY
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.

-- NOTABLE: Fannin County leads series 8-6. Dawson County won 43-3 in 2017 in Dawsonville. The two teams met every season since 2006. The Tigers have won two straight and 6 of the last 8 meetings, including 3 of the last 4 in Blue Ridge. ... The winner will be in second place while the loser would drop to fourth in the region standings so a lot is riding on this one. The Rebels perhaps have been the biggest surprise in 7-3A and the three overall wins are the most since 2015 and the two region wins also are the most since 2015. The Rebels also could win the region with a win this week and a win over GAC on Nov. 2, which would throw it to tiebreakers. ... The Rebels struggled mightily last week against North Hall’s wing-T offense giving up a school record 663 yards to the Trojans. It won’t get any easier this week against a Tigers power rushing attack that is averaging 372 yards a game and is 5th in Class 3A in scoring (293 points, 41.8 ppg). Sr. QB Sevaughn Clark and Sr. RB Ahmad Kamara have combined for 1,423 yards and scored 21 rushing TDs on the season. Fannin is in the bottom third in defense in 3A surrendering 32.4 ppg ... The Falcons outgained the Titans 334-157 last week and the defense forced two turnovers and did not allow a score after the opening drive until overtime. ... It figures to be a defensive slugfest. The Branch is 5th in Class 4A allowing just 80 points (11.4 ppg) while the War Eagles are 8th allowing just 13.1 ppg. ...  Both teams do have plenty of offensive firepower, however. Falcons' Jr. QB Elijah Gainey has 1,566 yards passing while Sr. WR Jalin Strown (36 rec., 827 yards, 9 TDs) is as potent a combination as there is in the state. ... Marist always presents a challenge with its patented ground game. The War Eagles scored six touchdowns in the second quarter last week, including a pair of pick-6s. The War Eagles average 214.1 yards on the ground and 125 yards through the air. DB/WR Kyle Hamilton, a Notre Dame commit, has with 541  yards receiving  and averages over 25 ypc. ... It’s a huge game for both teams with Marist closing out the season next week against Blessed Trinity. The Falcons are still in line to clinch a home playoff game if they can win out and get a Marist loss to Blessed Trinity. They can still win the region with a win and a Marist win next week, which would send things to a tiebreaker barring any upsets. The War Eagles can clinch the region title with a win this week and a win next week, which would send the Falcons to no better than the No. 3 seed.

The Spartans own the tiebreakers over 1-loss region teams North Hall and Dawson County and close out the season on Nov. 2 against the Rebels. ... The Bears have the toughest finish in 7-3A with GAC this week and Dawson County next week. The Bluff defense has yielded 41.7 ppg but the GAC offense is not as explosive in years past averaging just 28.3 ppg. ... The Bears scored a record 35 points last week, which was more than the three previous weeks combined.

HART COUNTY at EAST JACKSON

Neither team has been officially eliminated from the playoff race. The Bulldogs still have a chance for a No. 3 spot with games against Franklin County and Morgan County to follow. The Eagles could finish fourth but would have to win out. ... However, East Jackson, which has lost 5 straight, has allowed the 5th-most points in Class 3A (335, 47.9 ppg) and has scored the fewest points in the classification (27, 3.6 ppg) and has been shut out four times so far. ... Hart County has lost two straight to ranked teams Jefferson and Monroe Area.

-- RIVERSIDE MILITARY (4-3, 2-0 Region 8-A North): Ranked 23 in Class A Private power rankings
-- NOTABLE: Hebron Christian leads series 2-0. The Lions won 48-7 in 2017 in Dacula. ... Both teams are clinging onto two of the last four spots in Class A Private power rankings and a win for either would almost certainly boost their chances. A loss may not eliminate all playoff chances but it could get dicey with the Eagles traveling to Class A Public No. 5 Commerce and the Lions traveling to Class A No. 1 Athens Academy next week. ... The Lions are not eliminated from the subregion title with their loss last week to the Tigers but would need a win this week and have Commerce drop its last two games. A Hebron loss to RMA would eliminate the Lions from the subregion title while the Eagles can set up a showdown with Commerce next week for a shot at the subregion title. ... RMA already has more wins in a season since 2009 (5-6), the last year they made the playoffs. The Eagles have won three straight for the first time since 2008. -- NOTABLE: Franklin County leads series 10-4. The Panthers won 28-21 in 2017 in Carnesville. Jackson County has won 3 of the last 4 meetings since 2012. ... The games have been tight between the two teams with 3 of the last 4 being decided by a touchdown or less. Jackson County also has won 3 of the last 4 in Carnesville going back to 2001. ... The Panthers need a win to avoid being eliminated for the playoff race. A win over the Lions would keep them alive and give them some momentum before next week’s showdown with arch-rival Jefferson. ... Defensively the Panthers have been solid allowing just 107 points (17.7 ppg) to teams not named Monroe Area. However, the offense has struggled scoring just 95 points (13.6 ppg). ... The Lions had allowed 127 points (31.7 ppg) over their previous four games, all losses, coming into last week and had scored just 58 points (14.5 ppg) over that same span.

However, it will take a monumental effort to knock off the Wolverines, who are 3rd in Class A in scoring (328, 46.8 ppg) while the Lions have yielded the 8th-most points in Class A (279, 39.6 ppg). Lakeview also has scored the 5th-fewest points in Class A (57, 8.1 ppg).

However, the Trojans still have Dawson County looming so they cannot afford a let down if they have any chance of securing a home field playoff game or the region title, if the Spartans slip up over the final two weeks. ... It could be a fast game with the Trojans wing-T and the Indians wishbone attack chewing up yardage and time off the clock. Both teams can move the ball. North Hall is averaging 39.1 ppg while the Indians have scored 35.6 ppg in their three wins. But Lumpkin has scored just 10 total points in their four losses. ... This season, it could be an elimination game. ... The loser will be at the bottom of the region standings with just two games left. The loser would still be alive mathematically but have to win out and get a lot of help. The winner is right back in the hunt but would still need to perhaps win out and get help. ... GHS scored a season-high in points last week and may be finding an offensive identity behind So. QB Gionni Williams, who has gotten better each of the last three games, and RB Quintavious Hayes. After scoring just 46 points in their first four games (11.5 ppg) the Red Elephants have averaged 19.3 ppg over their past three games. ... The Bulldoggs defense has been solid most of the year despite giving a up season-high last week. They are yielding just 20.7 ppg. ... The first-year Danes have hit the proverbial wall dropping three straight in ugly fashion. They have been outscored 152-40 in that span and the defense has surrendered 237 points (47.4 ppg) over its last five games. A loss would eliminate the Danes from playoff contention. ... White County still offers an explosive spread attack behind So. QB J. Ben Haynes and has scored 35 or more in 3 of its 7 games. Finishing games was the issue early as the Warriors led in the fourth quarter in 3 of their 5 losses. ... The White County defense came up big last week as Michael Mintz got a scoop-and-score that helped keep West Hall at bay.
