No. 5 UNG overpowers Young Harris, extends PBC lead

YOUNG HARRIS — The fifth-ranked North Georgia baseball team continued its offensive onslaught, downing Young Harris, 13-2, Saturday afternoon at Zell Miller Field.

The Nighthawks improve to 28-7 on the year with the win and extend their lead to two games in the Peach Belt Conference standings at 13-4 after second-place Flagler fell to Armstrong State today.

The Mountain Lions struck first in their first in the bottom of the first inning plating a single run on a sacrifice fly. UNG answered in the next frame though as Trevor Sams launched a solo homer to left to tie the game at 1-1.

North Georgia took the lead in the third with a two-run blast by Michael Gouge followed by another solo shot by Sams to put UNG up, 4-1. Cory Ewald answered for YHC in the following from with a solo home run but the Mountain Lions would not score again as the Nighthawks scored nine unanswered runs to claim the 13-2 win.

NOTES
- Daniel McCrary (6-1) tossed his second complete game of the season allowing just the two runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

- Trevor Sams, Bill Leroy, and Conner Corbitt led the UNG effort at the plate with three hits each.

- North Georgia improves to 10-4 all-time against Young Harris. UNG has won eight of the last nine games in the series.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will look to pick up the sweep in the series finale tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
