State climatologist says no more hard freezes

By Sydney Hencil Anchor/Reporter
Georgia's State Climatologist said he believes Georgia is done with hard freeze events, however, North Georgia could still expect possible frost events.

“Georgia, especially north of I20 could maybe have a period of two maybe patchy like frost or close to freezing but it’s [temperatures] going to be above freezing still,”  Bill Murphey, state climatologist for the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, said.

Murphey said Georgians should expect above-normal temperatures for the spring with an equal chance of above, below, or normal rainfall.  According to Murphey, there will be more afternoon and evening isolated showers in the summer due to the rise in temperatures and warm moisture from the gulf.

“We're transitioning into a neutral phase right now.  That should persist over the next few months into the summer,” he said.

This means Georgia is transitioning between the cold La Niña to the warm El Niño phase which often brings tropical precipitation and wind patterns near average conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

Murphey said the pollen count has been high due to the warm spells in January and February which caused early blooming of vegetation. March 7 had the highest count of 3,937.
