Dahlonega man killed in Monday crash in Lumpkin County, driver charged

A Dahlonega man is dead and a 19-year-old faces charges for a wreck that happened early Monday morning in Lumpkin County.

Michael Fonghieser, 19, was driving along Ga. 52 East around 6:30 a.m. and crossed the center line, hitting an on-coming truck driven by Johnny Maurice Taylor, 57, according to Lumpkin County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Pfrogner.

Both drivers were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where Taylor died of his injuries; Fonghieser was still at the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.

He is set to turn himself in to authorities on Friday, said Pfrogner in a phone interview.

Fonghieser is charged with vehicular homicide, possession of marijuana, failure to maintain lane and a safety restraint violation.

Pfrogner said deputies are still working to determine whether or not Fonghieser was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the wreck.

Funeral services for Taylor will be held Friday. Little and Davenport Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
