ROME — While a thunderstorm delayed the start Monday night's match there would be no raining on the parade of the University of North Georgia offense as the Nighthawks used a strong second half performance to soar past Shorter, 6-4, at Grizzard Park in Rome. UNG improved to 2-3 on the season with the victory, snapping a two-game slide.
It took a little while for each offense to get into a groove, but Michael Akin started what would end up a goal frenzy in the 26th minute of the game finishing a ball from Eddie Hurst to put the Nighthawks on the board first. Shorter responded quickly with the equalizer in the 28th and then found a pair of goals in the 32nd and 33rd, to take a 3-1 lead.
Ivan Acimovic started what turned out to be an amazing half for the Nighthawks with an early goal in the 48th minute on a ball sent to the center of the box by Alex Grant. UNG would find an equalizer of its own in the 52nd taking advantage of a Hawks foul in the box as Adam Farrell converted a penalty kick to make it even at 3-3.
Shorter would answer though, scoring on a penalty kick of its own to retake the lead. The Nighthawks would not go silently however, as Santo Ylitalo brought the game even once again in the 74th.
North Georgia kept the hammer down as William Pettersson snuck a goal into the upper corner in the 82nd and Akin would add another goal late in the 88-th minute to put the game away and hand UNG a hard earned 6-4 road victory.
