CARNESVILLE — Officers from several jurisdictions in two states have captured the man accused in a homicide in Oconee County, S.C., early Thursday.
Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas identified the man as R.L. Webb, 64, of Westminster, S.C., saying Webb was arrested Thursday evening at a motel in Lavonia.
Lavonia police, Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputies and investigators, Oconee County (S.C.) authorities and the Georgia State Patrol and GSP Aviation were involved in the search for and capture of Webb, Thomas said.
Steven Gregory Brock, 50, of Westminster, S.C., was found shot to death in his home after an incident about 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
"Deputies from the [Oconee County Sheriff's Office] Uniform Patrol Division and the Criminal Investigations Division were dispatched earlier this morning, just before 2 a.m., regarding a shooting that occurred at a residence on Brock Road near Westminster," said OCSO Public Information Jimmy Watt in a statement.
"One individual, who resides at the incident location, died from a gunshot wound to the head," Watt's statement reads. "Based on evidence gathered during the investigation, investigators had enough probable cause to obtain the murder warrant against Webb."
Lavonia officers received word that Webb possibly had been in a business in the Ga. 17 area near Interstate 85, then began a search of the area. They notified the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and Thomas said he immediately called GSP to request aerial support.
Webb was arrested about 6:55 p.m. after officers received information he was at the Super 8 Motel near Interstate 85 in Lavonia, Thomas said.
"We cleared some folks out of adjacent rooms for safety reasons," Thomas said, adding officers broke down the door of the room to arrest Webb.
No one was injured during the arrest.
Webb is housed in the Franklin County Detention Center and signed extradition papers around 10 p.m. to be taken back to South Carolina, Thomas said.
"The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the citizens that called and provided tips that assisted the Sheriff’s Office in our investigation," said Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw in a statement. "We would also like to thank our law enforcement partners with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Lavonia Police Department for their assistance in the apprehension of Mr. Webb."
