Students at Tadmore Elementary have elected student council representatives in grades three through five, going through the same process that was used in the days and months leading up to Tuesday's General Election. But the campaigns lasted much shorter than those involved in Tuesday's voting.
Students completed a process that involved registering to vote, qualifying candidates, listening to campaign speeches, and participating in debates.
After two weeks of speeches, slogans, informative posters and campaign materials, the students cast their electronic ballots for the candidate that they felt would represent them the best. Over 200 third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders cast ballots. Ten representatives were elected to serve a one-year term on the student council which meets with school administrators on a regular basis.
"This encourages voter awareness and the responsibilities of each voter to make informed decisions," Joan Armour, Communication Teacher at Tadmore, said in an email. "It also promotes the...school’s commitment to 'every voice counts'."
