Qualifying begins Monday in Georgia for this year's general election, which will include races for hundreds of city council seats statewide.

The elections will be held Nov. 5, with Advanced Voting beginning Oct. 14.   The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 7.

In Hall County, Gainesville City Council and city school board posts will be voted on this year, while in the other municipalities, city council seats will be up for grabs.

In Gainesville, city council seats held by Zack Thompson, Barbara Brooks, and Ruther Bruner are to be filled this year.   Bruner, a 16-year veteran of the council, announced in February that she will not seek re-election.  School board members whose terms expire this year are John Filson, Willie Mitchell, and Sammy Smith.

Other cities and towns across northeast Georgia will also be conducting city council and, in some cases, school board elections Nov. 5.
