Softball: Half of area teams knocked out in 2nd round; Jefferson faces deciding third game

Several area softball teams saw their runs in the state playoffs come to an end while three others advanced and one will have to play a deciding third game after Wednesday's second round action.

Flowery Branch, East Hall, North Hall, and Union County all were swept out in the second round of their respective classifications. The Lady Falcons fell 2-1 and 15-0 to Ware County in Class AAAAA. East Hall, North Hall, and Union County all fell in Class AAA with the Lady Vikings getting knocked out by Cook County, 13-1 and 5-2 and the Lady Trojans losing to Worth County 10-2 and 6-2. Union County dropped two close games to Southeast Bulloch, 9-8 and 6-3.

East Jackson, however, was able to push through to the Elite 8 in Columbus in Class AAA sweeping Appling County 10-1 and 5-1 in their second round matchup.

Jefferson, meanwhile, split a pair of one-run games with West Laurens. The Lady Dragons took the first game 1-0 but lost 2-1 in the second game. The two teams will play a deciding third game Thursday in Jefferson for a spot in the Elite 8.

In other action Wednesday, No. 1 Buford advanced to its 12th straight Elite 8 in Class AAAAA with a sweep of South Effingham. Stephens County also advanced in Class AAAA sweeping Mary Persons
