Lanier Tech aims to become more military friendly

OAKWOOD - Lanier Technical College officials are pushing to make their school more inviting to members of the military.

"When people leave the military after active duty, many times they're looking for education opportunities. We want to be a college that welcomes our veterans," said Dr. Ray Perren, Lanier Tech president.

He said that will be done in a number of different ways, starting with the programs the schools will offer.

As part of their long-term plan, officials with Lanier Tech want to have degree and certificate programs that align with the skills many of the veterans acquired during their time in the military.

"Many of them, for example, (worked with) electronics when they were in the service. We want to be able to work with them, where they can take their military training and actually get a degree with that," said Perren.

The hope, Perren said, is that veterans can actually get class credit for the skills and training they receive from the military.

"We also want to have support services for our military veterans," said Perren.

That would include services to help veterans work with the Veterans Administration to receive their education benefits.

Perren spoke at a gathering of the South Hall Business Coalition on Tuesday.
