GAINESVILLE - Gainesville and Hall County are receiving assistance from Environmental Services Contractors as well as the state Environmental Protection Division and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to determine the cause of a foul odor covering a good portion of Gainesville near Murphy Boulevard on the Hall County line since late June.
Kelly Randall, Director of the Gainesville Department of Water Resources, said Wednesday they have been monitoring the area on a daily basis for about a month and hope additional experts can help.
“Several areas have been inspected and deodorizers are being used in the area, but we still can’t say exactly where the smell is coming from. We continue to keep an eye on a couple locations. The first is a 2-3 acre area of rotting vegetation from the removal of a beaver dam near Flat Creek. The second is a nearby egg processing plant that lost power several weeks ago,” Randall said.
“We believe the odor is coming from an organic breakdown, not from a toxic source. We understand how disturbing this is for area residents and business owners and are doing everything in our power to get to the bottom of this.”
