LAWRENCEVILLE — On the same day he was set to go to trial, a man pleads guilty to the 2008 murder of a Sugar Hill woman.

According to a report in the Gwinnett Daily Post, Gerson Salmeron-Diaz, 27, entered a guilty plea to charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault in the death of Margaret Binkele.

The case had been cold until last year, when investigators were able to match DNA found at the crime scene with Salmeron-Diaz. At the time, the suspect was in jail in New Mexico on drug charges.

The newspaper said the 57-year-old Binkele, who neighbors called a reclusive alcoholic, was found dead in her trailer on July 25, 2008. The defendant and the victim had been neighbors.

Salmeron- Diaz was sentenced to 25 years in jail for his plea.
