Dog killed in Wednesday Sugar Hill house fire

By Austin Eller News Director

No one was injured, but a dog died in a house fire Wednesday afternoon in Sugar Hill.

According to a press release from Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services, two adults and two dogs were displaced after the home in the 5000 block of Hidden Branch Drive sustained extensive damage in the fire.

Emergency crews responded at about 5:05 p.m. after one of the residents called 911 and stated the kitchen was on fire. Arriving crews found the single-story home "well involved," when they arrived.

They were able to knock the bulk of the fire down and search the building for victims, at which time they found the dead dog in the home.

The fire was brought under control within about 30 mins.

A man who lived at the home told crews he was asleep in his room when he heard popping sounds. The man then found smoke in the hallway and was able to evacuate with two of the dogs. Smoke alarms were present in the home, but they did not alert the occupant. An investigation later determined that the fire was accidental and it started on the stovetop.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced residents.
