(VIDEO) Week 10: Area teams ready to begin wild finish for playoff bids

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

Anyone that says they have everything all figured out for area football teams as they head into the final two weeks of the season may also be willing to sell you some prime swamp land.

There are a few things we know: Rabun County has won Region 8-AA; Lanier has clinched a playoff berth in Region 8-AAAAA; and we know all four playoff teams in Regions 8-AAA and 7-AAAAAA (though the seeding is anyone's guess). Other than that, anything truly goes for everyone else.

It figures to be a wild Friday night around northeast Georgia as teams pull out all of the stops to grab a postseason spot or stay alive for another week. While Regions 8-AAA and 7-AAAAAA appear set, no one has clinched a top spot and all the teams that have advanced can still take the crown, making for an exciting final two weeks.

All three games in Region 7-AAA have playoff implications, with Dawson County on the cusp of its first-ever region title (Watch a video preview of the Tigers' showdown with rival Lumpkin County). Meanwhile, five Region 8-AAAA teams jockey for four spots.

There are several more teams on other regions that face do-or-die situations. In Region 8-AAAAA, Flowery Branch needs to win out but also is peaking at the right time as the Falcons play host to Salem with the loser virtually eliminated. West Hall also faces a must-win in Region 7-AAA, taking on Banks County at home.

A win for the Leopards would help them keep pace in a crowded field for third place. ... It was the first shutout loss for the Leopards since 2013. However, it was big plays on defense that hurt. They had been averaging 33.1 ppg on offense until last week. Only Lumpkin County has given up more points in 7-AAA than Banks County. ... It is the season finale for the Eagles, who have played the final eight weeks without a bye. They have lost seven straight and have scored just 14 total points in region play while yielding the second-most points in all of Class AAA (400, 44.4 ppg). ... It won’t be any easier for the Eagles against an Elbert County team that is still fighting for a region title and a first round home playoff game. The Blue Devils are second-highest scoring team in the region (258, 32.2 ppg) and need to win out and have Jefferson lose out to take the title so you know they will be motivated.
