ATHENS, Ga. (AP) More than 100,000 people in Georgia passed a test over the past five years certifying they have received the equivalent of a high school education.

The commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia, Ron Jackson, recently told state lawmakers the numbers need to be higher.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Jackson predicted 15,000 to 20,000 people will pass the test this year. But a larger number of students will drop out of high school.

About 1.2 million adults in Georgia lack a high school diploma.

The state's high school graduation rate this year was nearly 73 percent, up from 67 percent in 2011.
