Lady Panthers fall in semis; Parkview, Chattahoochee in finals of Big Red Shootout

GAINESVILLE -- The Jackson County girls' bid for an unexpected spot in the finals of the Big Red Shootout came to an end against Chattahoochee Friday at the Gainesville gym.

The Lady Panthers (6-5) were held to one point in the opening period and their late rally fell short in a 50-39 loss to the Lady Cougars in the semifinals.

Chattahoochee next will face Parkview in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Lady Panthers routed Franklin County 55-23 in the other semifinal.

Jackson County, which trailed 15-1 after the first quarter, pulled within 26-14 by halftime and trailed just 31-21 early in the third quarter before the Lady Cougars used a 10-3 run to close out the period for a 41-24 lead.

Jackson County closed out the game with an 8-2 run but it was not enough.

Katie Phillips led the Lady Panthers with 11 points. Victoria Fontana and Mason Garland had seven points each for Jackson County.

Cassidy Gaillard paced Chattahoochee with 18 points, including three 3-pointers.

Parkview opened with a 5-0 run and then used an 11-2 spurt to close out the first quarter en route to the win..

The Lady Panthers then turned up the defense. They held the Lady Lions to just three free throws and no field goals over the next 15 minutes while building a 42-10 lead late in the third quarter.

After that Franklin County never got closer than 28 points in the fourth quarter.
