Lakeview Lions 'roaring' about more than basketball

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The people at Lakeview Academy in Gainesville have more reasons to celebrate these days - other than their girls' basketball team's first trip to the state final four later this week.

Lakeview is touting the presence of two 1,000-point girls on campus: the basketball team's Chelsey Chastain and the debate team's Evelyne Freiermuth.

Three Odyssey of the Mind teams, two Lower School and one Middle School, placed 2nd in Region competition and will compete in the State competition in April.

Lower, Middle and Upper School students competed in the Regional and State Technology Fairs recently. Lakeview had 3 first place winners (2 Lower School student entries and 1 Upper School student entry) in the state competition; 8 second place winners in state, 4 third place winners in state.

Four Upper School students qualified to compete in the National Debate Tournament and six qualified for State competition. Lakeview is the smallest school to qualify for the state tournament.

Lakeview officials also report that a growing number of colleges and universities are accepting Lakeview seniors and the number of scholarships offered to them is increasing.

The school has 35 seniors in this year's graduating class with 6 scholarships ranging from $4,500 to $68,000, not including the Hope Scholarship. Lakeview officials says its seniors have college acceptances this year from 27 different schools ranging from North Georgia College and State University to Georgetown University.
