Gainesville, North Hall students picked for state advisory council

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville High School student and one from North Hall are among more than 50 high schoolers from around Georgia chosen to serve on the state School Superintendent's Student Advisory Council with Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox.

Maria Chavez of Gainesville High and Chase Staub of North Hall are among four northeast Georgians chosen for the council.

The others are Laura Beth Burnett of Elbert County and Anna Herdliska of White County.

"I am looking forward to our first meeting," Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox said. "This is a diverse group that represents a good cross-section of students from across the state. Each student brings a unique perspective to the council."

The 52 council members will meet with the Superintendent four times during this school year to discuss how decisions made at the state level are affecting students in Georgia's schools. The members of the group will also serve as liaisons between students and the Georgia Department of Education.

The first meeting is Oct. 17 at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
