Buford Dam renovation

By by Ken Stanford
BUFORD - Work begins in the middle of March on the first overhaul of Buford Dam since it was finished in 1958. The project will take about two years and cost more than $14 million dollars.

Cecil Quinley, a Corps of Engineers electrical engineer at the dam, said some of the upgrades include digital equipment.

As far as advantages to being digital, Quinley said, "one thing is better efficiency, more stability in the equipment." He added, "a lot of our existing equipment we can no longer get parts or support."

Quinley said workers will rehabilitate generators and turbines. "We have three generators and we'll start with the first one, and we'll be replacing the turbines and refurbishing the generators," said Quinley.

He said the bulk of the work on the "gates" was completed last year.

Quinley said a delay in some equipment delivery pushed the work off until next month. Work was supposed to begin in February.
