Girls basketball: Branch edges Chestatee to advance to Region 8-4A semis; Lakeview tops Pinecrest

BOGART — Flowery Branch used a third-quarter run to push them ahead by 10 points and held on the rest of the way to beat Chestatee, 55-48, in the first round of the Region 8-4A tournament on Monday at North Oconee.

Ashlee Locke scored 17 points, while Bella Brick and Shaina Kriews chipped in 12 points each. 

The first half was a back-and-forth battle with the Lady Falcons taking a 22-21 lead into the locker room at the half. It was the third quarter that proved to be the difference as Branch pushed the lead up to 10 points by the end of the period, 37-27 and held off a Chestatee run in the final eight minutes to win. 

The Lady War Eagles outpaced Branch 21-18 in the fourth. Rylee Rothschild added 8 points for the Lady Falcons.

Riley Black led Chestatee with 11 points, and Emma Easterwood pitched in 10. 

The Lady Falcons will play the winner of Madison County/North Oconee on Thursday at home. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

The Lady Lions are headed to the Class A-Private state tournament with the win over Pinecrest in the first round of the Region 6-A tournament on Monday.

Joelle Snyder led the way with 17 points, while Sidney Corbin scored 11. Annie Nivens, once again, led the rebounding effort with 10 boards.

Lakeview extended its lead to 22-16 by halftime and 33-22 at the end of 24 minutes of play. 

Lakeview will travel to No. 1 seed St. Francis on Wednesday.
