Obituary Date: Sunday, July 22, 2018

Dave DeVenny, 71, of Gainesville, GA, following a four year battle with cancer, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018, in his home, surrounded by his family. His Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, July 27, 2018 in the chapel of First Baptist Church, Gainesville, GA, officiated by Dr. Bill Coates. Visitation and a reception, lovingly given by the Seekers Sunday school class, will follow in the Banquet Hall foyer. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel.

 

Born in Eufaula, Alabama, on April 5, 1947, Dave was the only son of the late Monnie and Robert DeVenny. Dave is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy, and his daughters Carrie and April. He was a man of quiet strength who was an inspiration as he fought a hard battle with cancer and he was a man of faith with a generous and kind heart. Dave was a loving father and husband who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was also a true gentleman loved by all who knew him well.

 

Dave was a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology and spent over forty years in the banking industry. He began his career as an examiner with the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. He then served as a Vice President of the First National Bank in Madison, GA. In 1983, he moved his family to Gainesville, GA, to serve in the role of Vice President at The Citizens Bank, where he eventually served as President. He then served at various community banks in the area, finishing his banking career as Chief Financial Officer of Georgia Trust Bank in Buford, GA. He was actively involved in the community. His civic activities included serving as president of the Madison Kiwanis Club, the South Hall Rotary Club and the Quinlan Art Center in Gainesville and working with the Gainesville College Foundation. He also worked with the American Red Cross to provide defibrillators in schools. He was a 35 year member of First Baptist Church, Gainesville, GA, where he previously served as a deacon.

As a lifelong learner, in retirement, Dave focused on mastering his hobbies such as photography and learning new skills including weaving, chainmail jewelry making, woodworking, and learning to play various instruments. He also loved spending time in the North Georgia Mountains.
