M.J. Crocker, age 92, of Cornelia, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Habersham Medical Center.
Born on April 18, 1921 in Banks County, he was a son of the late William Tyson Crocker Sr. and Artha Simmons Crocker. Mr. Crocker was a member of First Baptist Church of Cornelia, where he served as Deacon Emeritus. He was a Master Mason in the Cornelia Masonic Lodge #92 F&AM, where he became a member on September 25, 1944. He was also a member and past president of the Habersham Rotary Club and former commissioner of the City of Cornelia. Mr. Crocker served as a U.S. Navy Seabee in the 42nd U.S. Naval Construction Battalion from June 29, 1944 until February 4, 1946 during World War II. He was retired from Habersham Metal Products with over 30 years of dedicated service.
Mr. Crocker sang with his brothers, and sometimes his sisters, in a southern gospel quartet. He loved his church family and friends, singing in his church choir and camping with his wife and their friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Crocker was also preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Snyder Crocker; sister, LaVerne Crocker; brother and sister-in-law, Grady and Virgina Crocker; brother, William Tyson Crocker, Jr.; sister-in-law, Patsy Crocker; brother-in-law, Ernest Snyder.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Bryan Adams of Black Mountain, North Carolina, Debbie and Kenneth Gosnell of Cornelia and Phyllis and Allen Strickland of Toccoa; sister, Mattie Lee Snyder of Cornelia; brother, Otis Crocker of Greenville, South Carolina; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Latrelle Crocker of Liberty, South Carolina and Curtis and Jeanettie Crocker of Gainesville; sister-in-law, Edna Hill Crocker of Cornelia; 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 2:00 pm Friday, March 21, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Cornelia with Rev. David Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Georgia National Guard and Masonic Rites by the Cornelia Masonic Lodge #92 F&AM.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
