Alma Marie Calhoun

Alma Marie Calhoun was born November 4, 1928 in Lumpkin County Georgia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theo & Ella (Grizzle) Carder; her husband of 57 years, Clyde Calhoun; sons, Ronnie Calhoun and Larry Calhoun.

Alma is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Mickey and Shirley Calhoun; daughters, Judy Lingerfelt and (Tom Christy), Reita and (Melvin) Snipes; daughter in law, Athie Calhoun; brother, Vernon and (Mary) Carder; Granddaughter and Husband Lori and Billy Brooksher; Step Grandchildren, Kevin Snipes, Tracy Snipes, Rick West, Mike West and Carol Whitehead; Great Grandchildren Jesse and Will Brooksher; Step Great Grandchildren, Cody, Kady and Caleb Snipes; Nephew Greg Carder.

Alma died with her children by her side on Christmas morning. Alma was a hard working woman on the farm as well as at the Pine Tree Plant for 30 years. She was a caregiver all of her life to her immediate family as well as others. Her mother in law, Willie Calhoun, lived with her most of her and Clyde's married wife. Willie died in 1997 just shy of her 100th birthday. Alma took care of Willie's 2 brothers: Artis and Clyde until their death. She and her brother, Vernon, took care of their parents, Theo who passed away in 1998, and Ella, for 10 years till her death in 2002.

She and her family took care of her youngest son, Ronnie, who fought a courageous battle against cancer till December 28, 2006. On November 4, 2007 her son Larry died suddenly on a hunting trip in Colorado.

Alma became homebound in December of 2009 and has had excellent care givers who have become family members: Regina Barnes, Carolyn Lowe, Sherri Holtzclaw, Elizabeth Phillips, Pat Brackett, Trini Grizzle, Nicole Grizzle, Ann Lawson, Lauren Gooch and Loretta Grizzle as well as all the wonderful people at United Hospice.

Alma loved her church and church family at Nimblewill Baptist Church and all Pastors past and present and was a member for 72 years. She always had a smile and a funny word for everyone.

Funeral services for Alma are scheduled for 2 PM Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the Nimblewill Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Rev. Allen Swafford, Rev. Todd Skinner, and Rev. L.C. Bennett will officiate.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5 PM until 9 P.M.
