John Luranc

John Luranc 86, of Cumming, Georgia passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024.

  Born in Utica, NY, John was the son of Polish immigrants and the youngest of seven children.  John graduated salutatorian from Utica Free Academy in 1956.  He began his career at General Electric shortly after high school where John was quickly recruited to work in the company’s drafting program utilizing his math and science abilities.  Working full-time, John pursued his degree at night and graduated in 1973 from Empire State College with an engineering degree.  While at GE, John met and later married the love of his life Marie on June 10, 1961.  The couple lived in Utica where their first child, Joseph, was born.  In 1965 GE moved them to Ormond Beach, FL for two years where John worked on the Apollo space program.  They returned to Syracuse, NY where their second child, Susan, was born.  In 1979, John’s career moved them back to Ormond Beach where they lived until 1983.

In 1983 FMC Corporation recruited John to fulfill a Director of Manufacturing and Engineering Computing position and they moved to Barrington, IL where they lived until 1995.  John retired from FMC in 1995 and was invited to join the National Center for Supercomputing applications at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL where he worked until 1995. 

After John’s retirement from NCSA, the couple moved to their mountain retreat in Mars Hill, NC.  John and Marie eventually settled in Dawsonville, GA to be closer to their children and grandchildren.  John was a devout catholic and active member of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Dawsonville, GA.  John joined the Knights of Columbus fulfilling various roles within the group while meeting lifelong friends.  John enjoyed learning and reading about World War II and traveling the world with close friends. 

John is survived by his two children Joseph John Luranc of Jacksonville Beach, Florida and Susan Luranc Kurtz of Chamblee, Georgia; six grandchildren, Louisa Trippe Luranc, Joseph John Luranc, Jr., Samuel Hutson Luranc, Luke Thomas Kurtz, Alexandra Marie Kurtz “Lexi” and Andrew John Kurtz “AJ”.  John’s wife Marie preceded him in death in 2018.  The couple was married 56 years.

A funeral mass will be held for John at 11 o’clock on Monday morning, April 8, 2024, at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Brian Higgins officiating.
