Mildred Thomas Smith

Obituary Date: Tuesday, February 13, 2024

Mildred Thomas Smith, age 93, of Dawsonville passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at her residence.

Born February 2, 1931 in Hall County to the late O. H. and Willie Mae Thomas, she lived most of her life in Dawson County.  Along with being a wife and mother, Mildred worked and retired from two carpet mills, Pine Tree Company Burlington Industries in Dahlonega in 1972 and Coronet Carpets in Gainesville in 1992.  She loved Christmas and she and Kenneth decorated their home inside and out for over 40 years for the whole community to enjoy, some of which would sometimes park and walk through the yards to see all the scenes through the season, or come inside for a cup of hot cocoa.  She also enjoyed working with Honey Bees.  At one time she and Kenneth had over 80 hives at various locations from which they would harvest the honey.  Another hobby Mildred loved for several years was raising and selling doves.  Her favorite song was On The Wings Of A Dove and she always said having the doves and hearing them cooing would remind them daily of how God sends his love to us on their wings.  Mildred was the number one supporter of the family as they traveled and sang gospel music for well over 20 years.  She loved that it allowed the family to visit and worship with so many different churches throughout the area.  In 1947 she married Kenneth Smith and was married to him for 52 years before his death in 1999.  She was also preceded in death by her sons, Herman Smith and Daniel Smith; grandsons, Todd Stowers, John Rowan, Steve Howard, Dwayne Rider; son in law, Greg Chumley; and brothers, Melvin Thomas, Earl Thomas, Howell B. Thomas and Hayne Thomas.

Mildred loved her family and was proud of each one.  Surviving are her daughters and sons in law, Linda and Pete Bearden, Carolyn Ingram, Sue and Melvin Loggins, all of Dawsonville; son and daughter in law, Stanley and Beverly Smith, Covington; 13 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; sister and brother in law, Joyce and Wayne Clark, Gainesville; brother and sisters in law, James and Martha Thomas, Doris Thomas, Audrey Thomas, all of Gainesville; and a large number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 16, 2024 at 2 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel.  Rev. Jimmy Payne, Rev. Darin Cain, and Rev. Richard Thomas will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 until 8 and Friday from 11 until 2 at the funeral home.
