Obituary Date: Monday, January 29, 2024

Joseph Lloyd Johnson / aka Doc / aka Sleeping Dog was born March 20, 1949 and croaked on January 29, 2024. For those of you who knew him, you will understand that his wish was to be described as having croaked. He was not your ordinary guy.   

He was the most amazing archaeologist, artifact finder, flint knapper, atlatl thrower, knife maker, tomahawk/pipe ax maker, long rifle maker, jewelry maker, copper sculpture artist, wildlife sculpture artist, metal artist, photographer, fiddle player, banjo player, John Hartford fan, humorist, jokester, writer, poet, thinker outside the boxer, self-teacher, storyteller, Travels with Foxfire contributing storyteller,  Native American historian,  literature and chemistry major,  psychology master, boat restorer, lake and river lover, fly fisherman, sharp shooter, welder, fixer upper, toolmaker, inventor, rain house creator, road apple creator, expert naturalist, Elachee volunteer,  History Center volunteer, Piedmont College lecturer, counselor, social worker, group leader, police officer, detective, pole vaulter, canoeist, Boy Scout, devoted friend, gift giver, passionate dog lover,  lover of his family, and dreamer.  

He is survived by his wife of forty six years, Julia, daughter Jennifer Valentine, son in law Mark Valentine and grandchildren Dillon and Sylvie.

A Celebration of Life will be 2 to 4 pm Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Elachee Nature Science Center.  Donations can be made in his memory to Elachee Nature Science Center.
