Donald Andrew Schultz 1932-2023

Don Shultz, age 90, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

Don Schultz was born in 1932 in McVille, North Dakota, the son of Kenneth and Antonia Schultz.  He was raised in a simple homestead farmhouse, the third of ten brothers and sisters. 

Don earned a B.S. in Biology from Valley City State Teachers College, then served in the army in Japan immediately after the Korean War.  He returned to North Dakota, earned a Master’s degree in biology from North Dakota State University, and taught school for six years.  He married Luann Anderson, a fellow teacher, in 1960.  In 1966, he moved to Georgia, where he had a career as a freshwater biologist for the EPA monitoring pollution levels in water. He worked there for almost thirty years, retiring in 1994.

Don enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He also enjoyed collecting Native American artifacts and he served as president and for many years as editor of the Peach State Archaeological Society.  He was active in Boy Scouts, serving as scoutmaster and assistant scoutmaster for over thirty-five years.  He was particularly involved in organizing camporees and promoting religious emblems for boys of all faiths, for which he was presented multiple scouting awards, such as the Silver Beaver Award.  He was also active in the Catholic Church, both in Athens and Gainesville, Georgia. 

His wife, Luann Schultz died in 2022.  Don is survived by his children and their families: his son Mark Schultz, who resides in Joliet Illinois with his family: wife Cathy, and children Annie, Brennan, and Nate; and his daughter Jessica Green, who resides in Gainesville, Georgia with her family: husband Rocky, and children Bethany and Zachary.
