Anne Bogart Porter

Phillipians 4:13

On the morning of October 15,2023, Anne Porter passed away peacefully of natural causes in Buford, Georgia. Anne was a beloved wife to her late husband Carl Porter and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was born on May 10, 1931, the youngest of 4 children, to Robert Cole Bogart and Mabel Aiken Bogart in Daytona Beach Florida. She lived with her family there until she went to college on an academic scholarship at Tennessee Wesleyan College. On her first day on campus, she met the love of her life, Carl and they were married in 1951. After marrying, Carl and Anne moved to Knoxville, TN where Carl attended and graduated from the University of Tennessee and Anne worked at Dale Avenue Settlement House as a program director. In 1955, Carl’s job brought them to Columbus and over the next several decades they raised their five beautiful children and became deeply involved in their community. As the children grew, Anne finished her college degree at Columbus College, earning a Master's Degree in Special Education. She lovingly taught physically handicapped students for the Muscogee County School District for many years until she finished out her teaching career on staff at the Achievement Academy.

Throughout her life, Anne was dedicated to the study of her faith and service to their community. As a faithful member of St. Luke Church for 68 years, she volunteered with the Samaritan Fund outreach program and along with Carl, led the telephone Sunday school class for those who were not able to attend in person. She and Carl were active members of the fellowship class and she was also part of a circle women’s group. Even after moving to North Georgia in her final years to live with family, Anne never missed a Sunday service online or a chance to review the church bulletin to see how she could be involved. She loved Columbus and in addition to her service at the church, she also volunteered through the years with the Columbus Museum and Women's Association of the Columbus Symphony. Her years of service were recognized in 2011 when she was awarded the Quiet Disciple Award from St. Luke Church.

Anne loved to be with her family and considered all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the joys of her life. She was an avid reader, always with a book in hand and another waiting, and her pursuit of knowledge was contagious. She loved to study her Bible and Christian history, leaving a legacy of grounded faith for future generations. She enjoyed listening to music and loved any opportunity to visit the Springer Opera House and River Center to hear the symphony or watch the ballet perform. She had a passion for gardening; creating beautiful landscapes through the years and passing down her green thumb to her children and grandchildren. Her life of service, faith, and community leave a beautiful legacy for her family whom she cared for so deeply.

Memorial service to be held on Saturday October 21st at 2pm at St. Luke Church (1104 2nd Ave, Columbus, GA). A visitation with family will take place at 1pm in the parlor adjacent to the main sanctuary at St. Luke. In lieu of flowers, Anne requested donations be made to United Methodist Committee on Relief – UMCOR at https://umcmission.org/umcor/
