Edgar “Hershel” Franklin Whitaker, age 90, of Lawrenceville, GA passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline “Polly” Whitaker; parents, Troy and Lexi Whitaker; brothers, Felton Whitaker, Bill Whitaker, RC Whitaker, Leroy Whitaker, and Robert Whitaker. Mr. Whitaker is survived by his daughters, Sherry (Danny) Jett of Bethlehem, GA, Tammy (Barry) White of Buford, GA; son, Eddie (Darlene) Whitaker of Buford; grandchildren, Michael (Rachel) S. Jett, Dr. Brandon (Morgan) L. White; great-grandchildren, Pierce, Kohen, Kanon; brother, Hubert Whitaker of Jasper, GA; sister, Molly “Sissy” Rita Whitaker of Alabama. He was born on August 31, 1933 in South Georgia to a share cropper family where he had to share shoes with his brothers. Mr. Whitaker moved to Atlanta, GA at an early age to learn the trade of brick mason which became his trade. He moved to Nashville to work and then settled in Atlanta where he met his wife, Pauline “Polly” Cantrell. Later on they moved to Sugar Hill, GA. Mr. Whitaker loved fishing, boat riding, putt putt golfing, watching GA Tech football, Nasar racing and monster truck shows. He also loved boiled green peanuts and scupadines, watching squirrels eating the peanuts that he shelled, and watching the bird feeders in the front yard. Mr. Whitaker loved his neighbors. On Mondays he ate clam chowder at Sweet Baby Janes, loved to eat at Gumlogs /Fish and BBQ Lodge in Lavonia Ga, Buckner’s Family Restaurant in Jackson, GA, Fresh Air BBQ and at the Varsity. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Buford. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, September 16, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
