Dr. Bruce J. Nixon

Obituary Date: Sunday, July 23, 2023

Dr. Bruce James Nixon, a loving father and grandfather, devoted brother, faithful friend, renowned physician, and beloved member of the Gainesville community, peacefully passed away on Sunday July 23rd at the age of 69 following a three year battle with lymphoma. His unwavering commitment to his patients and passion for medicine made him a cherished figure in the healthcare community and a guiding light for many aspiring medical professionals.

Born in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, Bruce was the son of the late Ross Nixon and Kathryn Nixon. His interest in medicine and helping others was evident from an early age and he pursued his medical education with determination. Bruce attended the University of Western Ontario where he earned his Bachelor of Science in genetics. He furthered his education at the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies where he researched neuroscience, then continued on to McMaster University to earn his PhD in neuroscience as well as his MD. Bruce completed a residency at Mount Sinai Hospital then both completed a fellowship and opened his own neurosurgery practice at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto. In 1993, Bruce and his family moved to Gainesville, Georgia to practice at Lanier Park Hospital and later also practiced at Northeast Georgia Medical Center and The Longstreet Clinic. His 32 years of medical service enriched, saved, and extended innumerable lives.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bruce was a dedicated family man. He was a loving companion to his partner Robin Thompson (fondly referred to as RT.) Their love for one another and enthusiasm for life was an inspiration to all those lucky enough to spend time with them. Bruce was a loving father to his three children, Robin, Bay, and Jamie, and grandchildren Emerson and Hadley. He treasured family gatherings where all would share stories, laughter, and good wine.

Bruce also had a love of travel and exploration. He was always looking for new experiences and ready to plan his next adventure. He was happiest traveling with RT, his children, siblings and friends. He loved to share the world with those he held close.

Bruce’s dedication to his patients, his inspiring mentorship, and devotion to his friends and family will forever be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing leaves a void in the medical community and hearts of his family and friends.

He is survived by his partner, Robin Thompson; children, Robin McKenzie (Carter), Bay Nixon and Jamie Nixon; Grandchildren, Emerson McKenzie and Hadley McKenzie; siblings, Richard Nixon, Janice Nixon, and Dr. Donald Nixon; and a host of loving family members and friends.

There will be a private celebration of life among family and close friends in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the North Georgia Community Foundation for the benefit of the Bruce J. Nixon Legacy Fund.
