Doris J. Hof Hickman

Obituary Date: Tuesday, July 18, 2023

Doris J. Hof Hickman, age 95, of Tiger, GA, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

Doris was born in Summit, New Jersey, and was welcomed into the world on June 16, 1928, by her parents, Julius and Johanna Hof and her brothers, Julius and Arnold, all of whom preceded her in death. Doris was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Howard W. Hickman, and son Bill Hickman. Doris, with her family, grew up in Chatham, NJ. She graduated from Chatham High School. After she married, she lived at home in Convent Station, NJ. In 1973, Doris and her family moved to Port Saint Lucie, FL where she resided for 32 years until moving to Tiger, GA to be closer to her daughters in 2005. Doris was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and daughter. Doris led a full life and her interests and activities were many. As a very young woman, Doris spent some time working at her family-owned forge. Doris for a time commuted to work in New York City, then lived and worked for a brief time in Dallas, TX. Doris traveled on more than one occasion to Europe to visit her parent’s families. She enjoyed skiing in Switzerland and the U.S. She also visited the “old” Cuba. She made many happy summer memories at the family bungalow on Long Beach Island, NJ. She was a member of the Morris County Historical Society and enjoyed bowling as well as golfing. In her later years, Doris continued to golf, earning “2 Holes-in-1”, sang like a bird with the Sweet Adeline’s, and was an accomplished wood carver. She was also a member of the Martin Memorial Hospital Pink Ladies Auxiliary, Stuart, FL. She was a woman of Christian faith and enjoyed the fellowship of several different churches in her lifetime; the last of which was Wiley Presbyterian Church. Doris having experienced the effects of the Depression shaped her into a resourceful and creative individual with a “can do it spirit” and tenacity to overcome any obstacle. She was a wonderful cook and loved hosting parties and family gatherings. She was an accomplished seamstress, teaching her young daughters to sew on the old Singer. She had indeed had a life well lived.

She is survived by her daughters, Merry Barnett (Danny) of Tiger and Holly Converse of Tiger; daughter-in-law, Linda Hickman of Cary, NC; sister-in-law, Meryl Hof of Berkeley Heights, NJ; grandchildren: Joshua Hickman (Lauren) of Franklin, NC, Jennifer Cutola (Chris) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Sarah Hopper of Clayton, Andrea Tracey (Jason Wilson) Denver, CO, and Autumn Gronborg Placerville, CA; six great-grandchildren; and five beloved nieces and nephews as well.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the numerous caregivers who enabled us to care for Doris at home in her waning years, especially Sara Wooten Garcia, Erin Scott, and Lila Woody, as well as the staff of LPM and Amedisys Hospice.
