Charles Emory Wimpy

Obituary Date: Saturday, July 1, 2023

Charles Emory Wimpy, a resident of Dahlonega, Georgia, passed away in his home while surrounded by family on the evening of July 1, 2023. Charles was born in Atlanta, GA, on July 17, 1945, to Archie "Guy" and Kathleen "Billie" Wimpy. Though Charles spent most of his life in Lumpkin County, he and his family resided on Anna Maria Island in Florida for many years. He graduated in 1963 from Manatee County High in Bradenton, FL, and the class of 1965 from Southern Tech in Marietta, GA, with a degree in Civil Engineering. Charles also served our country during the Vietnam War, stationed out of Fort Benning. In 1971, he married Elaine Ridley, with whom he shared his life for almost 52 years
Charles was an avid motorist and adventurer: flying airplanes since he was 16 years old, enjoying Nascar, scuba diving for lobster, and trucking - he was on the move. Charles has gone to every Daytona 500 since 1978 and spent 63 years in the trucking business. He started as a teenager with A. G. Wimpy Co and Wimpy Brothers INC, hauling to build roads. Then many years on the open road in long haul trucking - sharing many of those miles with his grandson, Cullen Wimpy, in the cab as co-pilot. Charles leaves a legacy as someone with an unshakeable love for family; he lived in a way that put others before himself. His life was a lesson in love, joy, and kindness. His warmth was a light for many and one that will be greatly missed.
Though with heavy hearts we say goodbye to Charles for now, his family knows we will be seeing him again, out on the open road to Heaven.
In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by his parents-in-law, Ralph & Dorothy Ridley; his brother Archie C Wimpy; his niece Traci Elizabeth Lee; his nephews Wex Wimpy, Jon Wimpy and Zebulon Guy Wimpy.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife Elaine; sons and daughter-in-laws Chad Wimpy, David and Patti Wimpy, Doug and Melissa Wimpy, Eric and Brianna Wimpy, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren Cullen Wimpy and Charles Lee Wimpy; grandchildren and spouses Lauren Wimpy Cain and Hunter Cain, Richard and Bethany Dix, of Dahlonega, Trey Dix and Molly Hardwick, Garden Valley, Idaho; 4 great-grandchildren Aden Dix, Cadence Dix, Blakeney Dix, Kennedy Harper Dix; brothers, sisters, and spouses; Al and Ann Wimpy, Jackie Wimpy Lee, Patricia Wimpy Adams and Edral Adams, William and Tracy Wimpy, all of Dahlonega, Nancy Wimpy Howle and Bill Howle, Bradenton, FL, Debby Wimpy Thomas and Trent Thomas, Asheville, NC; 11 nieces and nephews; 17 great nieces and nephews; 7 great-great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home on Thursday, July 6, 2023, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Yahoola Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Jones Family Cemetery.
