Doris Renee Green

Obituary Date: Tuesday, June 13, 2023

Doris Renee Green (Cholerton) of Gainesville, GA and a resident of Lanier Village Estates, passed away during the afternoon of Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

Doris was born on May 24, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and baptized on November 7, 1926 at the Washington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. “Chol”, as her classmates fondly nicknamed her, graduated from Roxborough High School in 1943 and was a member of the National Honor Society.  She then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947 from Temple University and was a member of the Theta Sigma Epsilon sorority and was elected into the Phi Delta Gamma women’s graduate fraternity.  Doris also completed post-graduate studies at Temple University (1948-57), MIT (1952) and the University of Edinburgh (1957) and obtained a Master of Science in Education from Indiana University in 1984.

Doris served as Head Counselor at Camp Woodhaven Girl Scout Camp, in Reading, Pennsylvania from 1948 – 1950.  Doris played field hockey after graduation for the Temple University Alumni “Owlettes” in Philadelphia. She was a member of the Philadelphia Field Hockey Association in the early 1950s where she was selected to play on one of two national teams.  Doris also was selected to play goalie for the Philadelphia Women’s Lacrosse team where she was chosen for Philadephia’s first team several years, and the national team twice.

Doris was employed as a schoolteacher and administrator for Clayton High School and The Friends School in New Jersey and Crown Point High School in Indiana.  Her teaching activities encompassed teaching Biology, General Science, English, English Literature and Math. She also coached the women’s field hockey, lacrosse and softball teams at Clayton High School.

Doris was introduced to the love of her life, Melvin Green through a mutual friend who was a member of a local theater group in Woodbury, New Jersey.  She married Melvin on November 23, 1957 at the Talmage Memorial Reformed Church in Roxborough, Pennsylvania. After honeymooning in Hawaii, their favorite vacation paradise, they spent their lives very much in love, raising their family and travelling around the world.

Throughout her life, which she lived fully and always with a great sense of humor, if Doris was asked how she was doing, she was fond of replying that she was still “fat and sassy”!  Many of Doris’ most cherished times were when she and her husband Melvin were visiting Hawaii, reading a good book, golfing, collecting Snoopy dogs, eating chocolate ice cream or simply sharing Old-Fashioned drinks.

In addition to spending holidays, graduations and other special events with her children and grandchildren, Doris’ greatest passion was for playing the piano.  She formed the Hilton Head Piano Quartet and the Music Makers at Lanier Village Estates, in Gainesville, GA where she led the group from 2006-2018, holding annual concerts featuring a variety of classical piano solos and duets.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, John and Irene Cholerton and her sister Joan Rader (Cholerton). She is survived by her son, Lyle Green, and his wife, Beverly, daughter, Alison Renee Green, and her fiancée, Richard Allen and five grandchildren; Christopher Green, Kelly Green, Brandon Floyd, Kristen Floyd, and Lauren Floyd King.
