Colleene Potts Ivey

Obituary Date: Friday, November 4, 2022

Colleene Potts Ivey, age 96, of Gainesville went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 4, 2022 in hospice care.

She was born on October 25, 1926 in Alto to the late Gibson Hose Potts and Mary Dessie Crenshaw.

A 1943 graduate of Lyman Hall High School, Colleene was an active member of her class and attended many class reunions. Following graduation, she furthered her education at Perry Business School, where she obtained skills that made her an invaluable asset to her employers. These included Gainesville and Associates, Brenau Academy, and eventually Lakewood Baptist Church, where she served as a financial secretary and administrative assistant from 1974-1993.

Never one to remain idle, Colleene enjoyed a very active retirement. She spent her days volunteering for organizations including Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Northeast Georgia History Center and Lakewood Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, helped organize VBS every year, and greeted guests on Sunday mornings.  A social butterfly, Colleene enjoyed card nights with friends, concerts at the Arts Council, and seeing the world. She and her friends traveled to Alaska, Iceland, Germany and Italy, just to name a few. She never let life pass her by and had a true zest for it.

Her greatest joy, however, was her family and her love for them. She  was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ted Ivey, daughter June Chester, brothers Guy and Larry Potts, sister Francis Wiley. She is survived by son David Chester(Gail), sister Ann Watson, grandsons Brad(Callie) and Bryan(Barbara) Chester, six great grandchildren, Anna Leigh, Charlotte, Ben, Zoey, Elizabeth and Sally, special friends Dave and Tammy Brannon and their children Sally Colleene and Mary Wynn, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Colleene was a constant presence in the lives of her family and friends. She could always be found on ball field cheering on her son, grandsons and great grandchildren. A sports enthusiast, she was an avid UGA fan and was a season ticket holder for many years. Her love and support of Gainesville High School athletics was celebrated with an honorary diploma she received in 2015.

Her extraordinary life will be celebrated on Friday, November 11, 2022 at Lakewood Baptist Church from 4:00-6:00.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the building fund at Lakewood Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
