Laverne McKay

Mrs. Laverne McKay, age 91, of Dahlonega, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2022. She was born on January 12, 1931 in Buckatunna, Mississippi, to the late Owen Paulette Fleming and the late Linzie Danner Fleming. Laverne worked for Lumpkin County School System as a bus driver for 19 years. The lives she touched in those 19 years will forever remember being met every morning and every evening with her infectious smile. She was a regular BINGO player and would frequently visit Dawsonville, Murrayville, Cleveland, Helen, and other places to play and be surrounded by her friends. Her family will forever remember her as a dedicated wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald "Don" McKay; siblings Owen Paulette Fleming Jr., Billy Ray Fleming, Bobby Gene Fleming, Bobby Lewis Fleming, Earnest Gene Fleming; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Daniel (Fonda) McKay, Jimmy (Alice) McKay, and Paul (Johnnie Ruth) McKay.

She is survived by two loving daughters, Becky (John) Nickelson of Dahlonega; Linda (Robert) McKown of Murrayville; siblings Virginia Mitchell, Eula (Ted) Betts, Joe (Agnes) Fleming, Terry (Judy) Fleming, Gloria (Wallace) Cade; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert (Joyce) McKay, Elaine Carter, Martha Fleming, Sheila Fleming; grandchildren Amanda (Aaron) Walker, Melissa Dale Nickelson, Ara Michelle Nickelson, Linzie McKown, Jessica (Ashley) Bridges; great grandchildren, Gabriel Walker, Ariel Walker, Declyn Bridges, Londyn Bridges; numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives also survive.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 21, 2022 in the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Dahlonega. The Rev. PA Partin will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, March 20, 2022 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
