Mamie Gertrude Saxon Armour

Obituary Date: Friday, August 28, 2020

Mamie Gertrude Saxon Armour, age 99, of Lula went to be with Jesus on August 28, 2020, at the Friendship Health and Rehab., Cleveland, Ga.

Born on April 27, 1921 in Leaf, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James “Jim” Saxon and Mary Etta Hix Saxon.   She was the last living of their nine children.  She lived in Lula, Georgia most of her life.  She retired from the New Holland Textile Mill in 1973 with 29 years of employment.  A lover of church, at age 14 she became a member of the Living Mission Methodist Church in 1935.  She attended Lula C.H. Church for years and currently was a member of New Haven C.H. Church.  She loved her church family very much.  Music was in the blood of most of the Saxon family and she was no exception as she was the pianist at Lula C.H. Church for many years.  She and her brother, Claude Saxon, were the original members of the Saxon Family Singers, singing in churches and camp meetings all across north Georgia.  She continued to sing and play the piano in the Friendship Health and Rehab Center even in her 90’s.  She loved flowers and gardening.  She spent endless hours planting and petting her flowers and homegrown vegetables.   She also loved to laugh and enjoy spending time with her family and friends especially at the many family reunions and Christmas gatherings which she never missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, T.M. Wiley, and Claude Armour, and her sisters Mae Saxon Smith, Lona Saxon Smith, Carrie Saxon Jackson, Lillie Bell Saxon Thomas, Dollie Saxon Duncan, Blanche Saxon Lewallen and her brothers Price Saxon and Claude Saxon.

Gertrude was a very loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother.  She is survived by her daughter Syble Wiley Gilstrap Black, her sons and their wives Ray Wiley (Glenda), and Jewel Armour (Nancy), her grandchildren Joshua Armour, Steve Gilstrap, Tommy Gilstrap, Tammy Reed, Chris Black, and Shane Black, and several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.  A number of nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.

The family wished to extend their deepest gratitude and appreciation to the Caretakers at the Friendship Health and Rehab Center, Cleveland, Georgia for all their loving care for our mother.  You are very dear and special people.

Funeral services will be held on August 30, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home.  The Rev. James Duncan, Rev. Deron Crocker, and Rev.
