Prescription drug disposal event set for Saturday

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) Georgians wishing to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs are asked to visit one of more than 90 collection points during National Drug Take Back Day this weekend.

The drug disposal event is scheduled for Saturday and is organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration's Office of Diversion Control.

Organizers say volunteers will be staffing collection booths throughout the state from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Several sites will be set up across north Georgia.

Aside from providing a place for people to dispose of unwanted medications, officials say the event is meant to also educate the public about prescription drug abuse.

A similar drug disposal event was held in late April. DEA officials say more than 370 tons of prescription medications were collected from more than 5,800 collection sites across the country.
