For more than a quarter century, northeast Georgians have paid tribute to the life and ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr., by holding a walk and a birthday commemoration.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance got under way at 3 p.m. Sunday at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Cornelia.

Old Gainesville Highway in Alto remained closed between the northern entrance of Wheeler Circle at Alto Police Department and the southern entrance of Wheeler Circle at 11:15 p.m. after a large tree fell on power lines there earlier Thursday night.
