An off-duty Gwinnett County Police officer is being credited with rescuing a tractor-trailer driver from a fiery crash on Interstate 85 in the north end of the county Friday.
A report from the Georgia State Patrol said the crash happened on I-85 Southbound near mile marker 123, just a few miles north of Exit 120 at Hamilton Mill Road. Officials said two tractor-trailers were involved in the accident, which ended in one of them leaving the roadway and striking the guardrail and retaining wall.
The truck's cab then caught fire with the driver still inside. An off-duty officer from the Gwinnett County Police Department reportedly saw the crash, ran to the truck and removed the driver.
The crash left I-85 Southbound shut down in the area for over an hour as officials worked the scene and continued to snarl traffic on the interstate through the afternoon.
