Truck reported stolen near Clarkesville, later recovered from Lake Russell

By Christian Ashliman Anchor/Reporter

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate after a truck was reported stolen early Tuesday and was soon after discovered to be submerged in Lake Russell.

A Lake Russell employee was passing the boat ramp Tuesday morning at approximately 6:30 a.m. when they saw a vehicle’s headlights under the water with no signs of anyone in the area.

Due to the 911 caller reporting the truck as “still running” and could not confirm anyone inside or outside of it, the incident was reportedly dispatched as a water rescue, according to Habersham County spokesman Rob Moore.

Upon arrival, responding crews discovered the vehicle was a Toyota pickup truck that had just been reported stolen from the Clarkesville area.

The case is currently under investigation and no other details have been released at this time. Anyone with information on the case has been asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office Tipline at (706) 839-0525.

Habersham County officials have reminded residents to “always keep their vehicles locked and keys secured.”
