By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter
The Gainesville Theatre Alliance announced Wednesday the lineup for its 2023-2024 season, with four titles and a bonus performance for audiences to enjoy.

This year’s season GTA  will produce The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Crucible, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

“We designed this season to be one that shares a little more levity and light to raise our hearts and minds, with perhaps a singular dip into the dramatic,” Artistic Director Zechariah Pierce, said. “We want to invite patrons, both new and long-standing, to return to the theatre.”

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, will be presented by WonderQuest. Dramatized by Joseph Robinette from the story by C.S. Lewis, the show will run at Brenau University’s Pearce Auditorium on October 7, 8 & 14, 2023.

Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, a new book by Douglas Carter Beane, and an original book by Oscar Hammerstein II, and will run at Brenau University’s Hosch Theatre November 10-18. The Tony-winning Broadway Musical is from the creators of SoutPacific and The Sound of Music and aims to bring a contemporary take to the classic story.

Beginning in 2024, fans of the organization can look forward to its production of The Crucible, by Arthur Miller at Brenau University’s Hosch Theatre February 16 -24.  The historical drama that explores the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem was the 1953 Tony Award Winner for Best Play.

The organization will close out the 2023-2024 season with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the University of North Georgia -- Gainesville’s Ed Cabell Theatre April 12-20. The Tony and Drama Desk Awards winner for Best Book was written by Rachel Sheinkin and features music and lyrics by William Finn.

In addition to this season’s lineup, GTA will also produce a holiday add–on the performance of  An Actor’s Carol: One Clown’s Dickensian Marathon Toward Redemption at the University of North Georgia-Gainesville’s Ed Cabell Theatre December 1-3 2023. The one-man show adapted for the stage by David Weber, Tim Blewitt, & Zach Hilbun will star Weber, a Georgia native, and brings elements of clown, mime, and vaudeville techniques to the Dicken’s classic A Christmas Carol.

Tickets for all productions are on sale now. In a press release, GTA said that the organization will be reintroducing season packages for the first time since 2019. With this offer, patrons can receive up to 20% off based on the number of shows they purchase. An Actor's Carol is not eligible for package discounts.
